KahKow’s history dates back to 1905, when the Rizek family founded Rizek Cacao in the Dominican Republic. The company set to work to cultivate, produce and export chocolate all over the world. In 2019, the company decided to expand and opened KahKow Chocolate Factory in New York, where it produces award-winning chocolates and single-origin cocoa products.
Customers can tour the factory for the full KahKow experience or sign up to make cocoa butter soaps. They offer a chocolate bar where chocolate drinks and snacks can be purchased and a shop in person and online. Refined cocoa products such as cocoa butter and nibs can be purchased. And in a show of community support, in addition to selling their own quality products, their website has an entire section dedicated to fellow bean-to-bar chocolate producers called Chocolate Wall. It’s a one-stop-shop for all things cocoa.
And don’t worry, if you go around this plant, there is little chance of turning into a giant blueberry. As chocolatier Damion Badalamenti said CBS2 in 2019, “It’s not Willy Wonka. It’s not chocolate fountains and tubes. It’s dramatic but it’s very real. It’s the art of making chocolate from the roasting to the finishing.”
