Food Network star Alex Guarnaschelli’s chocolate cake might have a simple name; however, the end product is anything but.

Guarnaschelli’s chocolate cake is the ultimate Valentine’s Day dessert
In his latest cookbook, Cook with me: 150 recipes for the home cook, the chef shared her favorite chocolate cake recipe, being clear that she gladly jumps at any chance to cook. “Mostly because,” she wrote, “I’ve spent so much of my adult life cooking chicken breasts and making salads.” (Find the complete recipe for this chocolate cake in cook with me.)
Her cake includes two sticks of unsalted butter, one and a half cups of granulated sugar, two large eggs, three large egg yolks, a tablespoon of vanilla extract, two cups of all-purpose flour, a half cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, one teaspoon of kosher salt, half a teaspoon of baking powder and baking soda, and one cup of room temperature buttermilk.

Chocolate lovers will fall in love with Guarnaschelli’s moist chocolate cake and its just-sweet enough frosting. Simple and elegant, it’s a flavorful and tender cake you’ll come back to again and again.
The icing on her chocolate cake calls Kahlúa
To top it all off, the Food Network personality says, “You can serve it with this white chocolate frosting (which gets an extra boost from Kahlúa) or make the same frosting with dark chocolate instead.”
If you’re using white chocolate for the frosting, Guarnaschelli points out that white chocolate chips shouldn’t be used: “Buy white chocolate bars instead and finely chop as much as you need.” The reason, she says, is that a chopped bar melts more evenly than chips.
Prepare the glaze by simmering the heavy cream and Kahlúa in a saucepan over medium heat. Then the chef says to combine this cream mixture with the melted white chocolate until smooth. Just be sure to keep the frosting warm!
She admits that if it were up to her, every cake would be a Black Forest cake, and so she would also “love to load the top of the glazed cake with brandied cherries”.
Guarnaschelli says not to rush through a particular stage
the Chopped the judge notes that one step in the process of this cake that should not be rushed is the creation of the dough.
She explains that to start, a cup of butter needs to be creamed in a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. Sugar is added and mixed on medium speed until smooth.
Stressing that this should take about 10 minutes, Guarnaschelli says, “Don’t rush this step; the sugar softens and fluffs the butter and that’s part of what gives a good cake its nice texture.
