6 Store-bought Chocolate Cakes From Worst To Best – Eat This, Not That

One of my favorite desserts is a big slice of chocolate cake. There’s something very nostalgic about a slice of rich cake with a bunch of chocolate frosting on top. I might have had this almost every year when I was a kid for my birthday, and it might just happen that this cake is just a vehicle for that delicious chocolate frosting from the plastic jar – you know to who I’m talking to.

The chocolate cakes I ate as a child most often came from a boxed mix that my mom or grandma bought at the grocery store and to me they were the best cakes in the world. As an adult I decided to try more chocolate cakes with various frostings, toppings and toppings, but I always come back to boxed cake mix for a heartwarming dessert that holds my sweet tooth back for a while. Due to my love for chocolate cake, I decided to figure out which boxed chocolate cake mix tasted the best. I evaluated these cakes on taste and texture and noted if the recipe didn’t work quite right. Here is what I found. Even though there was nothing “bad” about this cake once baked, and although I would still eat it if someone put it in front of me, a cake had to come last. The main problem with this cake was the texture. It was very crumbly, which made it difficult to eat. The cake fell apart from the moment I started slicing it after it had cooled and when I tried to put some on my fork. The taste was ok, but not too chocolatey, but the fact that it couldn’t even resist slicing was a big deal for me.

I’m all for eating organic, but when it comes to cake, I really just want a slice that tastes good. This one didn’t quite do it for me. The texture of the cake was good and not too crumbly, but I wish it had a richer and deeper chocolate taste. This one almost tasted like hot chocolate powder after sitting down for a while and losing some of its decadent chocolate flavor. If you’re on an all-organic diet that’s a win, if not, choose something else.

Devil’s cake is typically the chocolate cake mix available at most grocery stores. While the Duncan Hines brand of chocolate cake tasted decent, there were better options on the table. One thing that knocked this one off the list a bit was that it gave way after baking. I went back to make sure I followed the directions after seeing this, and sure enough, I did, so I was disappointed the cake sank. Overall the taste was good and I was pleasantly surprised that the flavor of the chocolate was balanced without being too sweet.

There is nothing cuter in the food world than the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Her smiley face on the front of this box made me think I would smile when this cake was made too, and I definitely was. The cake was chewy and perfectly baked according to the directions on the back of the box. The chocolate flavor was important without being too much where I needed a break from the cake with a glass of milk.

A dark horse in the chocolate cake race is Walmart’s Great Value Devil’s Food Cake. The cake was light and chewy, had a great chocolate flavor, and stood up to a lot of frosting stacked on top. The cake had a slightly crumpled top, but I think that was because I almost knocked the pan off after taking it out of the oven compared to the cake not rising properly. And let’s be honest, the frosting can mask small imperfections in the cake.

The number one chocolate cake I tasted was from Betty Crocker. The cake had a robust chocolate flavor that didn’t have an artificial taste. Loved that the cake and chocolate frosting complemented each other without being overbearing. What the cake lacked in sweetness was made up for by a soft layer of frosting. The cake was chewy without looking too much like a fudge brownie. If you’re looking for the ultimate boxed chocolate cake mix, this is it.
